AEO and SEO are not two strategies you choose between. They are two outcomes of mostly the same work. SEO aims to get your page into a list of results that someone clicks. AEO, answer engine optimization, aims to get your business named inside an answer that someone reads instead of clicking. The underlying requirements overlap heavily, and for a small business the practical difference comes down to three things: how you format a page, how much your facts agree across the web, and how you measure whether any of it worked.
If you are deciding where to spend a limited number of hours this month, the short version is that the work is shared, so do the shared work first and add the answer-specific formatting as you go.
What each term actually means
- SEO is everything that helps a search engine find, understand and rank your pages: a site that can be crawled, pages that match what people search for, reasonable speed, and other sites linking to yours.
- AEO is everything that helps an assistant quote or recommend you when it composes an answer: a passage it can lift without rewriting, facts it can verify elsewhere, markup that states those facts plainly, and permission to read your site in the first place.
That last point is the one people miss. Assistants reach your pages through their own crawlers, and those are governed separately in robots.txt. OpenAI’s search crawler is OAI-SearchBot, and a site that blocks it may be left out of ChatGPT’s search answers even while ranking normally in Google.
One more thing worth saying plainly, because buyers ask: ChatGPT now shows labeled sponsored listings in several markets, but those sit beside the answer. The mention inside the answer is not for sale.
SEO and AEO, side by side
Where the work is the same
Most of it. A crawlable site, pages that match real questions, accurate information, a clean internal structure and credible outside mentions serve both outcomes. Nobody gets quoted in an answer for a page that search engines cannot reach, and nobody ranks with contradictory facts scattered across directories.
So the honest framing for a small business is not AEO instead of SEO. It is: do the shared foundation, then spend a little extra effort on three habits that specifically help answers.
Lead with the answer.
Two or three sentences at the top that answer the question in the heading, before any context.
Put the facts in markup.
Organization or LocalBusiness and FAQPage markup, matching what the page says visibly.
Make your facts agree everywhere.
One description of what you do, the same contact details, the same service list, across your site and every listing you control.
None of those three costs much once the page is being written anyway, which is why we treat them as part of writing rather than as a separate program.
What to do first, depending on your business
If customers find you locally, start with the facts. Your listings, your hours, your service area and your reviews are read constantly, and they are what an assistant leans on when someone asks who does this work nearby. Fix contradictions before you write anything new.
If customers research before buying, start with the questions. Write a page per question people actually ask, each opening with a direct answer. That serves both outcomes at once: the page can rank, and the opening passage can be quoted.
If your site is new or thin, start with the foundation. Make sure the site can be crawled by both kinds of crawler, that your pages are indexed, and that your business is described the same way everywhere. Answer visibility without a crawlable, consistent site is not a thing.
How you measure each one
SEO you can measure. Google Search Console gives you impressions, clicks and average position per query, which is enough to see whether a page is gaining ground. Our guide to reading Search Console covers what to look at first.
AEO you have to check by hand, at least for now. Write down 10 questions a customer would type in their own words, ask them in a fresh chat in the assistants your customers use, and record whether you were named and who was named instead. Repeat monthly. It takes about twenty minutes, and the pattern it reveals is more useful than any single ranking: you learn which format the answers reward in your category.
Expect the two to move on different clocks. Rankings shift gradually and visibly. Answer mentions tend to appear in jumps, often after a listing correction or a new outside mention lands.
The takeaway
If someone tells you AEO replaces SEO, ask them what they would do differently on Monday morning. The answer, almost always, is the same crawlable site, the same clear pages, the same consistent facts, formatted to be quotable. That is not two budgets. It is one piece of work with two payoffs.
Where they genuinely diverge is measurement, and that is worth planning for: if you only watch clicks, you will miss the visibility you are gaining inside answers that never send a click.
